MATTHEW 1: 1-16 | GENEALOGY OF JESUS

THE MESSIANIC LINEAGE:

Discover how Matthew’s genealogy reveals Jesus as Messiah—Son of David, Son of Abraham, from the tribe of Judah, fulfilled in the virgin birth.

Matthew opens with a genealogy, but this is more than a historical list and often carry theological messages. Matthew presents the genealogy of Jesus, identifying Him not only by name but also by title Messiah.

MESSIAH meaning “Anointed One.” In Greek, this is Christos-CHRIST

The opening verse refers to Yeshua as The son of David, The son of Abraham”.

Son of David - Messianic promise of kingship

Son of Abraham - Abrahamic Covenant

Matthew lists David before Abraham to highlight Yeshua's royal authority.

JUDAH'S PROMINENCE IN YESHUA’S LINEAGE

Matthew traces Yeshua's genealogy through Judah not Reuben(being the first born) aligning with Genesis 49:10, which prophesies the Messiah would come from Judah.  From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture consistently traces the Messiah's lineage through the tribe of Judah beginning with prophecy. Fulfilled in Yeshua's birth (Matthew 1:1–17) Culminated in His eternal kingship (Revelation 5:5)

THE UNCOMMON INCLUSION OF WOMEN

Matthew includes Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Mary in Yeshua's genealogy a rare practice in ancient records to highlight their faith, redemption, & God’s sovereignty, even in broken & unexpected situations.

Tamar - She demonstrated covenant faithfulness according to Torah principles, even before Torah was written.

Rahab - A Gentile from Jericho, showed faith and joined the people of Israel.

Ruth - A Moabite, displayed covenant loyalty and became an ancestor of King David.

THE CURSE OF JECONIAH AND THE VIRGIN BIRTH

Matthew's genealogy includes King Jeconiah (Jehoiachin), who was cursed in Jeremiah 22:30. The Curse of Jeconiah appears to block the messianic line, but the answer is Virgin Birth.

Matthew 1:16 emphasizes this: “Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Yeshua who is called Messiah" pointing directly to Mary underscoring that Jesus was born of Mary by the Holy Spirit but not of Joseph.

This preserves the Davidic lineage through legal inheritance via Joseph while bypassing the prophetic curse on Jeconiah's descendants through the virgin birth.
