MATTHEW 2 : 1-12 | THE WISEMEN VISIT THE MESSIAH

THE WISEMEN VISIT THE MESSIAH

“How Did a Star Lead the Wise Men to the Messiah?”

Lets check out by answering the below questions .

  • Why was Jesus born in Bethlehem of Judea?
  • Who were the Magi, and why did they follow a star?
  • How did the star point to the Messiah?
  • Why was Herod and his people so troubled by His birth?
  • What did the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh reveal about Jesus?

THE BIRTH IN BETHLEHEM

“Now after Jesus (Yeshua) was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men (Magi) from the East came to Jerusalem.” Matthew 2:1

Magi - “Wise men” (it was connected to those who studied the heavens—astronomers or astrologers)

There is even a Jewish tradition that not all exiles returned from Babylon. Some remained there, faithfully waiting for the Messiah. It’s believed these wise men may have been among them—scholars who knew the Scriptures and longed for God’s promises.

THE STAR AND PROPHECY

“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” Matthew 2:2

This was no ordinary star. It wasn’t a comet or natural phenomenon—it was supernatural. The star moved, guided, and finally stood still over the very place where Yeshua was.

The wise men understood this was a divine sign and responded in faith.

THE REACTION OF HEROD

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. Matthew 2:3-6

Why? Because the people were not looking for the Kingdom. Their hearts lacked expectation for the Messiah.

Herod immediately called the chief priests and scribes, asking where the Messiah would be born. Without hesitation, they quoted Scripture:

“In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet” (Micah 5:2).

Verse Matthew 2:6 adds: “From you shall come a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.”

THE GIFTS AND WORSHIP

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11

The Magi finally found Yeshua—not in a stable, but in a house with Mary.

Their response was immediate: they fell to the ground in worship. Then they offered Him gifts, each carrying prophetic meaning:

These gifts were not random; they revealed who He truly was and what He had come to do.

DIVINE INTERVENTION

God’s hand was at work all along. The Magi were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, and they left by another way. Later, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, telling him to flee with his family. Matthew 2:12

Herod’s scheme to destroy the child failed—because no plan of man can overthrow the purposes of God.

His sovereignty is unshakable. Those who oppose Him may appear to succeed for a moment, but true joy, peace, and victory belong only to His plan.
