Greetings in the name of Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
In Psalm 23:4 (from Bible) King David says,
"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
When you walk through the darkness, He is the light that brings you hope. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth, lived a sinless life, died for our sins, and rose again to offer us forgiveness and eternal life. Salvation is a FREE GIFT, available to all who repent and believe in Him. You are invited to accept Jesus as your Savior today and begin a new life with Him.
WHY SHOULD YOU BELEIVE?
To truly understand the significance of El-Roi, we need to delve into the context in which it was given.
2000 BCE-1800BCE, a man named Abraham and Sarah living in city of Ur, located in southern Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). When Sarah could not conceive, she became desperate and, following cultural norms, gave Hagar to Abraham as a concubine to bear a child. She was a servant in the household of Abraham and Sarah. Hagar became pregnant with Abraham’s child, but this led to tension and jealousy between Sarah and Hagar. Sarah’s mistreatment of Hagar became unbearable, and in her distress, Hagar fled into the desert, uncertain of what would become for her and her unborn child. In the wilderness, at the lowest point of her life, that she encountered an angel of the Lord. The angel revealed God's intimate knowledge of her circumstances, offering her comfort and a promise. God instructed her to return to Sarah and submit to her, and in that moment, Hagar declared God to be El-Roi, "the God who sees me.”
At times, we forget God's plan for our lives and instead follow our own ideas, dreams, and career paths, which often lead to disappointment or disaster. There are moments when God calls us to turn back, heal broken relationships, and seek reconciliation.
This encounter marked a life-changing moment for Hagar. In her moment of despair, she discovered that she was not forgotten by God. Not only did God see her, but He also cared for her, offering guidance and hope for the future. This revelation of God’s attention is what makes El-Roi so powerful—God sees those in distress and offers a pathway forward.
In a single declaration, Hagar emphasizes that God is not just the Creator and Sovereign Lord of the universe but a God who is acutely aware of the personal struggles, pain, and isolation of individuals. This name encapsulates a key aspect of God's nature: His attentiveness to those who may be forgotten or overlooked by the world, especially in times of distress.
WHAT IS BEER LAHAI ROI?
"Beer Lahai Roi" it is a Hebrew word, translates to "Well of the Living One Who Sees Me" or "Well of the One Who Lives and Sees Me." It is the name of the well where Hagar encountered God, and it signifies a place of divine revelation and provision. The name emphasizes that the living God, who sees, was present in that place. After Hagar’s encounter with God, she was instructed to return to Sarah and submit to her authority. Hagar obeyed, and in the wilderness, she found a well where she and her son would be provided for. This well became known as Beer Lahai Roi, the place where Hagar had been seen and heard by God.
"It was there, in the wilderness, that she found a well. And so, she called the name of the well Beer Lahai Roi, which means ‘Well of the Living One Who Sees Me.’" (Genesis 16:14)
Jesus Christ as EL-ROI
The name El-Roi is fully realized in the life of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God’s compassion and care for humanity. Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus repeatedly moved by compassion for those who were suffering. Whether it was healing the sick, comforting the grieving, or delivering the oppressed, Jesus always saw the needs of those around Him and responded with love.
In many ways, Jesus is the embodiment of El-Roi. He demonstrated God’s active care for those who are marginalized, oppressed, or suffering. Like the woman with the issue of blood, the blind beggars, and the lepers, those who were often unseen by society found in Jesus a God who saw them, cared for them, and acted on their behalf. Through Jesus, we see God’s ultimate act of compassion—a God who sees us in our suffering and enters it to bring healing, restoration, and salvation.
King David, says in psalms 121, He praises Jesus as
"He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore."
When life feels overwhelming, remember that God sees you. He sees your pain, your fears, your doubts, and your hopes. He is with you, and He will never leave you. As the Psalmist declares,
"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).

The name El-Roi underscores God’s Omniscience—His all-knowing nature. God is fully aware of everything. There is nothing hidden from Him. From the grand narrative of human history to the intimate details of individual lives, God sees it all. This is not an indifferent observation, but an active, compassionate awareness. In Hagar’s case, God’s knowledge was not limited to her outward actions or circumstances. He saw her heartache, her isolation, and her fear. And He responded to her with care, comfort, and guidance.

El-Roi also reveals God’s is Compassionate care. When we think of God seeing us, it’s important to remember that His sight is not passive. God’s vision is driven by love and compassion. In the case of Hagar, she was a vulnerable, mistreated servant, and yet God saw her. He did not ignore her pain or let her suffer in silence. Instead, He acted. Jesus who responds to human suffering—not from a distance, but with hands-on involvement. His seeing is always paired with His desire to bring relief and healing.
3. God’s Promise of Redemption
When God revealed Himself to Hagar as El-Roi, He also spoke a word of promise about her son, Ishmael. God promised that Ishmael would become the father of a great nation. This aspect of El-Roi shows that God’s seeing is not merely about understanding the present moment but about offering a future hope. Even in suffering, God’s awareness of our circumstances is intertwined with His plans for our redemption and restoration. His seeing is always connected to a greater purpose and a divine future.
